MRSI - Trivandrum Chapter

The creation of MRSI-TRIVANDRUM CHAPTER was announced along with 7 other Chapters at the Inaugural function of MRSI at Hyderabad on 10th February 1989 by Prof. C.N.R. Rao, FRS, the Founder President of MRSI, with Dr. A.D. Damodaran (RRL-T) and Dr. K.V. Nagarajan (VSSC) as Chairman and Convener respectively. On that day 3 Life Members and 7 Members got enrolled as Founder Members of not only the Local Chapter but also of the Parent body. Later, about 25 new members got enrolled as Founder Members of the local Chapter on its Foundation Day in July 1989.

The Total membership of the Chapter rose steadily. The society is currently presided by Dr. T. Ramasami, Secretary, DST, Govt. of India and is committed to stimulate and integrate the research in the field of materials to cope with the rapid industrial progress in the country. Pursuant with this mission MRSI is designed to undertake indigenous research and development of a wide range of materials and its application. Its headquarter is in the campus of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The Bulletin of Materials Science is a bi-monthly journal being published by the Indian Academy of Sciences in collaboration with the Materials Research Society of India and the Indian National Science Academy.

The journal publishes original research articles, review articles and rapid communications in all areas of materials science. It has an International Advisory Editorial Board and an Editorial Committee. MRSI Newsletters is the quarterly publication of the Materials Research Society of India for circulation amongst its member

Preliminary Discussion Meetings for setting up of the Local Chapter took place on 7th and 17th April 1989 at Regional Research Laboratory(RRL-T) and Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC) Trivandrum respectively. The following Members were present in the second Meeting at VSSC - Dr. A.D. Damodaran, Dr. V.N. Krishna Murthy, Dr. K.V. Nagarajan, Dr. T.S. Lakshmanan, Dr. K.N. Ninan, Dr. R. Ramasamy and Dr. C.K.S. Pillai. The objectives of the Chapter are the same as those of the parent body.

In this meeting, the decision to hold the Foundation Day of the Chapter along with a Technical Seminar by the end of July 1989 was taken. Thereafter every year in January the Chapter has been conducting the Annual General Body Meeting following the parent body calendar of January-December. The affairs of the Chapter have been conducted by an Executive Committee consisting of a Chairman, Convener, Treasurer and 6-8 Members duly elected by the General Body. The first Executive Committee of the Chapter was held on 31st January 1990, wherein the decisions were taken on (i) conducting Annual Technical Seminars on topics of interest to Materials Scientists keeping in view the multidisciplinary nature of the Society and (ii) Improving the interactions with other Professional Societies, R&D organizations, Academic Institutions and Industries existing in Trivandrum.
